Ohio State program supports maternal health for postpartum women and children

Lachaela Brooks said on July 15 that she fled an abusive relationship in Cleveland about eight years ago while pregnant with her second child, seeking safety in Columbus with her 7-year-old daughter. She explained, “When I came down here, I was just distraught. I was fleeing a domestic violence relationship, and I didn’t have any care established. I didn’t know anybody and I was pregnant, so I needed care.”

Brooks chose to seek maternity care at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She said this decision brought unexpected benefits: as she prepared to have her second child, she learned about a program that would help her receive crucial care for herself while also ensuring the health of her children.
