FARE announces publication of two food allergy studies in peer-reviewed journal

FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) announced on July 15 that two research articles have been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice. The studies utilized FARE resources, with one drawing from the FARE Patient Registry and the other from the FARE Clinical Network, both designed to support research into food allergy prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Both articles were published online earlier this month, with print publication expected in the coming weeks. Sung Poblete, PhD, RN, CEO of FARE, said, “Research doesn’t happen in isolation—it depends on the infrastructure, partnerships and participation that make discovery possible. For years, families managing seed, spice and herb allergies had almost no research to turn to, even though these reactions can be as severe as those from more studied allergens.”

Poblete continued by saying, “As more centers offer oral immunotherapy without a shared standard for how it’s done, we’re seeing why consistency in patient selection, dosing, and monitoring matters as much as access itself. Both studies demonstrate the importance of creating and funding the right infrastructure to support food allergy research. We’re grateful to our donors for the support that enables these important milestones.”

The first study, titled “Seeds, Spices-Not Always so Nice,” used data from 2,601 participants in the FARE Patient Registry who are allergic to sesame or other seeds and herbs/spices. The study provides foundational evidence about these less-studied allergies which can cause severe reactions and impact quality of life.

The second study—“Food Oral Immunotherapy Patient Selection, Dosing, and Monitoring Practices Among a Network of US Food Allergy Centers”—was conducted within the FARE Clinical Network. It offers one of the first national overviews of real-world oral immunotherapy practices across leading U.S. centers. Findings revealed significant variation in patient selection criteria as well as dosing and monitoring approaches despite widespread adoption.

The FARE Patient Registry is a secure database created through patient surveys for use by researchers; it has contributed data for over a dozen peer-reviewed articles so far. The oral immunotherapy study marks the first use of data from the FARE Clinical Network—a coalition aimed at providing advanced diagnosis and treatment options while expanding access to clinical research.
