The American Lung Association announced on July 15 the launch of a new campaign to educate people about expanded access programs (EAPs), also known as compassionate use, for individuals with severe and often rare lung diseases who have no remaining effective treatment options and may not qualify for or have access to a clinical trial.
“Expanded access programs can offer hope to families facing serious or life-threatening lung diseases. While clinical trials are incredibly important to the advancement of new treatments for lung diseases, not everyone may have access to a clinical trial or qualify to participate,” said Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. “This is where EAPs fit in. EAPs provide an alternative path for patients to consider.”
According to the association, EAPs may offer eligible patients access to new and investigational products and treatments, such as medications or medical devices. The campaign aims to increase awareness so that more people are informed about this option.
The American Lung Association has partnered with Savara Inc. to provide support and educational resources for individuals living with lung disease and their caregivers. The organization offers comprehensive educational materials and support services, including the Lung HelpLine at 1-800-LUNGUSA, where a lung specialist can answer questions about EAPs and connect callers with helpful resources.
The American Lung Association has supported research contributing to advancements in lung disease treatment, extended its influence nationwide through local offices and community initiatives, received high ratings for fiscal management from Charity Navigator, worked toward improving lung health through research, education, and advocacy efforts, and is led by Harold Wimmer as president and CEO, according to the official website.
