Hair loss biotech company Veradermics has seen its stock price surge 656% since its initial public offering in February on the New York Stock Exchange. The company debuted with an upsized offering of $256.3 million under the ticker "MANE," and as of July 1, shares were trading at $128.48, up from an opening-day price of $37.75.
The company's primary asset is a late-stage, extended-release oral version of minoxidil aimed at securing the first oral approval for male pattern hair loss in three decades and the first-ever oral approval for female pattern hair loss. CEO Reid Waldman said on July 6 that Veradermics' success is linked to lessons learned from the recent growth in obesity treatments: “Weight loss showed the playbook and viability of a cash-pay, consumer-directed market and gave investors and us conviction that hair loss could be the next weight loss.”
Waldman also noted potential synergies between hair loss and weight loss markets: “There is a next level of nuance there, though, which is that hair loss and weight loss are actually synergistic, and it creates opportunities,” he said. The CEO added that direct-to-consumer channels are changing how pharmaceutical companies engage patients.
Veradermics recently completed a Phase 2/3 trial for its investigational drug VDPHL01 in more than 500 men with pattern hair loss. Results showed statistically significant increases in average hair count compared to placebo groups. The company raised $150 million in a Series C round last October to fund these studies before going public.
Regulatory uncertainty has not been a major concern for Veradermics due to what Waldman described as consistent leadership within the dermal division at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The company plans to share topline data from a Phase 3 confirmatory study later this year while also recruiting participants for trials focused on female pattern hair loss.
Looking ahead, Waldman anticipates continued momentum: “We’re trying to bring a medicine that we believe is meaningful to a very large number of Americans and people worldwide,” he said.
