Summertime can present unique challenges for people with allergies and asthma, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology announced on June 30. The organization said that while many focus on spring and fall as peak allergy seasons, summer triggers can also impact those affected.
Allergist Cherie Zachary, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI), said, "When the sun comes out, unfortunately so do summer allergies. As the weather heats up, it can bring extra challenges for those with allergies and asthma. However, with a few simple steps – symptoms can be managed and summer festivities can go on as planned!"
The ACAAI outlined several strategies to manage summertime symptoms. For those experiencing itchiness after eating certain raw fruits or vegetables—such as peaches or carrots—the cause may be Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome (PFAS), also known as Oral Allergy Syndrome. Cooking these foods often prevents reactions. Mold is another common trigger during hot and humid months; it grows in various indoor and outdoor locations such as basements, bathrooms, under sinks, logs or uncut grass fields. Measures like wearing a mask during yardwork or using dehumidifiers indoors may help reduce exposure.
Food allergies require particular vigilance at cookouts or public gatherings where cross-contact risks are higher due to shared grills or potluck dishes containing allergens like peanuts or shellfish. The ACAAI recommends always communicating allergy needs to hosts or restaurant staff and carrying epinephrine when leaving home.
Smoke from bonfires or wildfires poses additional risks for people with asthma in the summer months. The ACAAI advises avoiding smoke when possible; if not feasible, wearing an N95 mask may help filter particles that exacerbate symptoms.
Seasonal allergy sufferers are encouraged to keep windows closed at home during high pollen periods and shower after outdoor activities to limit exposure. Consulting a board-certified allergist remains important for identifying specific triggers.
