New research led by the University of East Anglia suggests that even modest, short-term changes in weather can have a measurable impact on NHS mental health service demand across England, according to a June 29 announcement. The study, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, found that fluctuations in temperature and levels of sunshine are linked to shifts in unscheduled mental health-related healthcare use. Increases were observed during periods of hot weather and low sunshine.
In contrast, rainfall appears to have little consistent effect on mental health service demand. The findings indicate that specific weather patterns—rather than overall conditions—are key drivers of pressures on mental health services. The research was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry.
The study is one of the largest of its kind and used data from more than 4.6 million mental health–related healthcare contacts with emergency departments, family doctor out-of-hours services, and the NHS 111 telephone advice line. Lead researcher Dr. Richard Elson from UEA's School of Environmental Sciences said, "One of the important findings from our research is that everyday weather conditions influence mental health and when and how people seek support, not just extreme weather such as heatwaves." He added, "Understanding factors that influence fluctuations in mental health–related healthcare demand is an important public health priority, and may help planning and preparedness efforts for mental health services under current and future climate conditions."
The team included researchers from UEA's School of Environmental Sciences, Norwich Medical School, and the UK Health Security Agency. They estimated associations between weather exposures—including mean daily temperature (°C), hours of full sunshine, and total daily rainfall (mm)—and healthcare use across England using national surveillance data collected by UKHSA alongside Met Office data spanning January 2014 to December 2022.
Across all three healthcare services studied, demand increased with rising temperatures up to around 18°C and was higher on days with fewer hours of sunshine; this pattern was most pronounced for anxiety and depression-related contacts at GP out-of-hours services or emergency departments when there were fewer sunshine hours. Rainfall did not show a consistent association with service use overall.
The study concludes that understanding these environmental influences could aid public health planning as climate patterns continue to change.
