Woman finds relief after years of misdiagnosed acid reflux symptoms

Jennifer Brautigam said she is grateful to once again enjoy a banana split with her husband at their favorite ice cream shop, something she thought would never be possible. For years, Brautigam struggled with persistent acid reflux and unexplained chest pains that made eating difficult and disrupted her daily life, according to a June 22 report.

She experienced multiple conflicting diagnoses over the years. Specialists ultimately attributed her symptoms to anxiety, which left her discouraged and uncertain about the cause of her discomfort. Brautigam said this experience undermined her trust in the medical system.

Her situation changed in 2025 when she met a doctor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center who listened to her concerns, recognized the complexity of her symptoms, and provided an accurate diagnosis that allowed her to resume activities she enjoyed.

Ohio State Health and Discovery addresses societal issues such as health equity and substance use, offers resources on wellness and research advances, includes hospitals and outpatient facilities as part of its academic medical center, focuses on health care research and education, seeks to advance health through innovations in patient care and community involvement, and extends efforts to improve health across Ohio and globally, according to the official website.

Brautigam’s experience highlights challenges some patients face when seeking answers for complex or misunderstood conditions.
