New study finds TyG:eGFRcr-cys ratio predicts cardiovascular risk in large cohort

A new article published in BIO Integration announces on June 16 that the TyG:eGFRcr-cys ratio is an effective predictor for cardiovascular disease risk. The research analyzed data from 261,865 UK Biobank participants, evaluating the associations of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, estimated glomerular filtration rate based on creatinine and cystatin C (eGFRcr-cys), and their combined ratio with incident cardiovascular disease.

The study used Cox proportional hazards models to assess these associations and applied restricted cubic splines to determine the non-linear relationship between the TyG:eGFRcr-cys ratio and cardiovascular disease. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to explore variations across different groups and reinforce findings. For external validation, a separate clinical cohort was assembled at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University by enrolling patients between 2018 and 2020 who had baseline measurements for both indices. These patients were followed for up to four years.

The results showed that higher quartiles of the TyG:eGFRcr-cys ratio were associated with increased hazard ratios for total cardiovascular disease compared to the lowest quartile. Specifically, after adjusting for covariates, hazard ratios were reported as 1.15 (Q2 vs Q1), 1.17 (Q3 vs Q1), and 1.24 (Q4 vs Q1). Each standard deviation increase in this ratio corresponded with estimated increases in risk: 249% for overall cardiovascular disease [HR, 3.49], 250% for coronary heart disease [HR, 3.50], and 165% for stroke [HR, 2.65].

The analysis indicated a non-linear relationship between increasing values of the TyG:eGFRcr-cys ratio and elevated cardiovascular risk (P-value <0.001). Subgroup analysis suggested that these associations were more pronounced among White individuals and females.

According to researchers, as the TyG:eGFRcr-cys ratio increased, so did the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease, particularly among females and White individuals.
