Experts highlight increased sun damage risk to skin during air travel

Air travelers face a heightened risk of sun damage to their skin due to increased ultraviolet radiation exposure at high altitudes, according to an article published on Jun. 10 by Ohio State Health and Discovery.

The article explains that flying between 30,000 and 40,000 feet exposes passengers to more ultraviolet rays than they would experience on the ground. "Data from a 2015 JAMA Dermatology study showed that an hour inside an airplane cockpit resulted in an equivalent amount of UV radiation to 20 minutes in a tanning bed." The Earth's thinner atmosphere at cruising altitude allows more UV rays through, and reflective surfaces like clouds or snowfields can further increase exposure.

Windows on airplanes may block some UVB rays but often allow UVA rays—which are linked with skin aging and higher cancer risk—to pass through. Passengers are advised to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear long-sleeved clothing, use sunglasses with UV protection, and keep window shades closed when possible. The article also recommends using lip balm with SPF and staying hydrated due to dry cabin air.

The risk of skin damage is greater for flight crew members—especially pilots—than for passengers. "In fact, a review of 19 research studies that was published in JAMA Dermatology in 2015 concluded that pilots and cabin crews have about twice the incidence of melanoma compared with the general population." However, even passengers should be aware that cumulative exposure from long flights can contribute to skin damage over time.

When choosing sunscreen for travel, individuals should select products labeled as “broad-spectrum” for both UVA and UVB protection. Creams or lotions are generally preferred over sprays for better coverage; mineral-based sunscreens are suggested for sensitive skin or allergies. Travelers should also consider additional measures such as sitting away from windows if possible, booking flights during early morning or late evening hours when sunlight is less intense, using antioxidant-rich moisturizers before flying, reapplying moisturizer during flight, drinking water regularly, and protecting children’s skin as it is especially vulnerable.
