The UK medical device sector reflected on the results of Med-Tech Expo 2026, held at Hall 7 of the NEC in Birmingham, as post-event discussions continued on social media following the event on June 11. Attendees and exhibitors reported that the exhibition fostered vital debates around sustainability and regulation while also highlighting high-quality networking opportunities.
Delegates noted that face-to-face engagement was a key strength, with Barbara Kajak of Deutsche Telekom saying: “Exhibitions tend to be intense: long hours, plenty of logistics, and months of preparation in the background. But once the show starts, all of that turns into something very energising – real conversations, new perspectives…” Many participants discussed ongoing technical innovation in areas such as AI-enabled technologies and Software as a Medical Device.
Returning exhibitors like Smallfry Design commented positively about reconnecting with industry contacts. The team said: “It was great to reconnect with contacts from across the industry. One of the most rewarding parts of the event was sharing updates on products we’ve helped bring to market, and seeing the reaction from suppliers and partners who were part of that journey.”
The event featured dedicated spaces for start-ups and innovation. Jacqui O’Connor, Founder of MedScan 3D and winner at the NIHR Pitch Competition, stated: “It was a privilege to present alongside so many brilliant start-ups… Moments like these remind me why you have to keep stepping out of your comfort zone!” Lesley Plön from Johner Institute remarked: “The start-up pitches were very interesting: showcasing the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in the UK that continue to drive the MedTech industry forward.”
Panel sessions addressed changes in NHS procurement policy. Gisèle G. Kouam from Blue Circle Consulting commented on value-based procurement during a panel discussion: “Whole-life cost capped at 40%. At least 60% of evaluation will be weighted on value, clinical outcomes, patient impact... NHS Supply Chain has formally committed to applying it across framework procurements...” She added that companies must now provide structured evidence for their products under this new methodology.
Exhibitors praised both co-location with Interplas and Birmingham’s role as an emerging health tech hub supported by strong manufacturing expertise and hospital networks. The Element team summarized attendee sentiment by stating: “Med-Tech Expo from Med-Tech Insights didn’t disappoint! We’ve rebooked our stand for 2027, so we’ll be back with more of the same…”
