Ohio State Health and Discovery released advice on Apr. 15 for preventing and treating dry, cracked hands, a common problem caused by environmental factors and frequent handwashing.
Dry hands can become uncomfortable or even painful due to exposure to low humidity, cold temperatures, harsh chemicals, or repeated washing. The organization said that taking early action with proper hand care can help prevent irritation and more serious issues throughout the year.
The skin acts as a barrier protecting against environmental elements. When this barrier is compromised—such as through loss of natural oils from frequent washing—moisture escapes and cracks may form. These cracks can lead to redness, bleeding, itching, or increased risk of infection. Conditions like eczema or psoriasis may worsen with persistent dryness. Certain soaps or sanitizers can also trigger contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals.
To help maintain healthy skin on the hands, Ohio State Health and Discovery recommends moisturizing regularly with creams containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, petrolatum or dimethicone; using fragrance-free products; wearing gloves outdoors or when working with chemicals; gentle handwashing with mild soap; maintaining indoor humidity between 40–50%; eating a balanced diet; and choosing thick creams over lotions for severe dryness. For extra hydration overnight, applying ointment under cotton gloves is suggested.
If over-the-counter moisturizers are not effective or if cracks become infected, the organization advises consulting a dermatologist who may prescribe stronger treatments such as topical steroids or antibiotics.
