Ella DuBro, a student at The Ohio State University, received a double lung transplant after being diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension during the summer of 2022. DuBro had attended the Country Thunder music festival in Wisconsin and began experiencing severe breathing difficulties before her favorite artist performed. She texted her mother, "Mom, I am dying," as her symptoms worsened.
DuBro's condition escalated quickly that evening. After struggling to walk and nearly passing out from exhaustion, she was carried by a friend to the festival's medical tent. Medics found her blood oxygen levels were dangerously low and transported her to a hospital in Chicago for urgent care.
DuBro had previously been diagnosed with asthma at age nine but said her breathing problems became much worse leading up to the event. "I would only be able to take about 10 steps without feeling like I was going to pass out," DuBro said.
