Kazakhstani healthcare professionals highlight barriers and opportunities for environmental sustainability

Healthcare professionals in Kazakhstan are increasingly aware of the importance of environmental sustainability, but face several obstacles to adopting green practices in healthcare settings, according to a new qualitative study. The research involved focus group discussions with nurses, physicians, midwives, and physical therapists across three Kazakhstani cities between June and August 2023.

Participants identified that sustainable healthcare practices can benefit both patient outcomes and organizational efficiency. However, they pointed out challenges such as limited resources, lack of awareness about sustainability measures, and insufficient institutional support. Strong leadership was highlighted as essential for the successful implementation of environmentally friendly policies.

The study found 137 initial codes from participant responses, which were categorized into 22 sub-themes and five main themes. These results provide insights into how frontline healthcare workers view efforts to make healthcare more sustainable. The findings also stress the need for strategic leadership and organizational commitment to advance sustainability initiatives.

Researchers suggest that increasing awareness, improving resource allocation, and enhancing policy support will be important steps toward environmentally responsible healthcare in Kazakhstan. They note that integrating sustainability into everyday practice could contribute to both environmental protection and better patient care.

No patients or members of the public participated in this study. The research adhered to EQUATOR guidelines using the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ).
