To maintain brain health as people age, engaging in lifelong learning is recommended. Research from Ohio State’s College of Social Work suggests that older adults benefit from more than just acquiring new knowledge and skills when they participate in educational programs.
An online survey conducted with 107 participants enrolled in college courses through Program 60 found that these individuals experienced increased emotional satisfaction and enjoyed interacting with younger students. The study also indicated that such programs help expand social networks across different age groups and support the health and well-being of older adults, contributing to more successful aging.
Program 60, available at The Ohio State University and other state universities, allows individuals aged 60 and older to attend undergraduate or graduate-level classes tuition-free on a non-credit, non-degree basis as space permits. These courses teach current information, digital literacy, new regulations or programs relevant to seniors, and provide opportunities for socialization and communication skill development. Engaging in these activities can help keep cognitive abilities sharp.
Building intergenerational social networks is another benefit for older adults. Younger people can learn from the experiences of older generations, while seniors gain exposure to new technologies and contemporary programs.
Other ways for older adults to stimulate their minds include socializing by joining groups or attending cultural events, challenging themselves with games or puzzles, exercising regularly, pursuing hobbies or learning new skills such as writing or traveling, and volunteering or participating in research.
