Unbound Medicine and Johns Hopkins Medicine have expanded the Johns Hopkins Psychiatry POC-IT Guide to include new clinical guidance on psychedelic medicine. This addition was developed by specialists at the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, which is recognized as the largest research center of its kind.
Many individuals with complex mental health issues such as treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) do not benefit from standard therapies. Estimates suggest that up to 30% of people with major depression and nearly a third of those with PTSD fail to respond to conventional treatments, demonstrating a need for alternative approaches.
Psychedelic-assisted therapies have recently become an area of significant interest in psychiatric care. Clinical trials indicate these therapies may offer benefits, and ongoing studies could lead to approval by regulatory authorities in the future.
The updated Psychiatry Guide offers healthcare providers evidence-based recommendations intended to support safe decision-making regarding psychedelic medicine. It also includes educational materials for patients, updates aligned with DSM-5-TR criteria, and revised drug information.
A recent panel at Johns Hopkins addressed current research on psychedelic medicine and discussed how primary care clinicians might play a larger role in managing psychiatric conditions using these emerging therapies. Panelists highlighted both the potential advantages of psychedelic treatments and the importance of careful patient evaluation and clear communication between clinicians and patients.
"This update marks another milestone in our longstanding collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine," said Bill Detmer, MD, CEO of Unbound Medicine. "For 15 years, the POC-IT Guides-delivered through the Unbound platform-have helped clinicians access essential information, deliver better care, and achieve meaningful improvements in patient outcomes."
