Ohio State trauma team helps soccer player return after gun violence injury

When Ohio State Buckeye soccer fans gathered at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to watch a match against Wisconsin, few were aware of the significance of senior captain Nathan Demian’s presence on the field. Only months earlier, Demian had survived a life-threatening injury that nearly ended both his athletic career and his life.

In December 2024, after helping the Buckeyes secure a victory over Wake Forest to advance to the College Cup, Demian was injured in an incident involving gun violence. The event occurred as he was celebrating with teammates following their win.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Demian returned to play soccer eight months later with the same intensity as before. Jennifer Knight Davis, MD, a critical care surgeon who treated him at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Emergency Department, commented on his recovery: “As a trauma surgeon, the most rewarding thing I can see is my patient returning to the exact life they had before they were injured.”
