The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) has expressed concern regarding Florida’s recent decision to end school vaccine mandates for children. The organization, which represents more than 6,000 allergists, immunologists, and allied health professionals, highlighted the importance of vaccines in public health.
“Vaccines have long been a cornerstone of public health. They are rigorously studied and monitored for safety and have proven effective in reducing the spread of serious, and often highly contagious, viral and bacterial infections. For decades, school vaccine requirements across the country have helped maintain high levels of community immunity and protect vulnerable populations,” ACAAI stated.
The group noted that its members care for patients with conditions such as asthma, eczema, and immune deficiencies who are especially at risk from infections. “Some of these individuals cannot receive vaccines due to underlying medical conditions and must rely on herd immunity for protection. Even small declines in community vaccination rates can result in serious consequences for these at-risk individuals,” according to the statement.
ACAAI referenced this year’s measles outbreak in the United States—the largest in 25 years—which saw over 1,400 reported cases and several deaths primarily among unvaccinated people. The organization warned that removing vaccination requirements could increase the likelihood of similar outbreaks both within Florida and elsewhere because of domestic travel and disease transmissibility.
“While we recognize the complex legal, ethical, and societal dimensions surrounding vaccine policy, the ACAAI respectfully urges policymakers to weigh the unintended public health implications of this change. Decisions impacting vaccine access and coverage affect not only individual families but entire communities, including those least able to protect themselves, especially children, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised,” ACAAI said.
Based in Arlington Heights, Illinois, ACAAI focuses on patient care as well as education, advocacy, and research related to allergies and asthma.
