The American Lung Association Research Institute has opened its 2026-2027 Research Awards and Grants cycle, inviting researchers to apply for funding aimed at advancing lung health. This announcement comes amid a challenging environment for scientific research, marked by changes in federal public health infrastructure and a freeze on several National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.
“With the changes to the federal public health infrastructure, and the freezing of several National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, biomedical research faces unprecedented challenges,” said Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. “At the American Lung Association, we remain steadfast in our mission to invest in promising research that can transform how we prevent, diagnose, and treat lung disease. These grants represent not only hope, but also a call to action to sustain scientific progress during turbulent times.”
The organization has been involved in major advancements since 1904, including efforts against tuberculosis, improving care for premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome, supporting progress in lung cancer treatments, and addressing new respiratory threats such as COVID-19.
For this grant cycle, funding will continue for basic, translational and clinical research projects through a rigorous peer review process. Researchers working in the United States are eligible if they meet individual grant qualifications and other specified terms.
Application materials are available via proposalCENTRAL. The application process is expected to take six to eight months with awardees notified by June 2026. More information about eligibility criteria and how to apply can be found at https://www.lung.org/research.
