American Lung Association offers free asthma resources as Ohio schools reopen

As the new school year approaches, the American Lung Association is urging parents and school nurses in Ohio to be aware of the risks that asthma poses to children. According to the organization, more than 163,000 children in Ohio currently live with asthma.

To support these students, the American Lung Association is offering free resources for school-based health professionals and families. These include an Asthma Flipchart and a Back-to-School Backpack program. The initiative is funded by the Reid Wiley Charitable Foundation.

The foundation was established by Glenn and Mary Wiley after their son Reid died from complications related to asthma in December 2020. Reid, who was diagnosed with asthma at an early age, played college hockey for the University of Akron despite his condition.

The American Lung Association encourages parents and school nurses to visit AsthmaOhio.org for free resources and information about how to improve quality of life for children with asthma, particularly those in high-burden communities.

"It can all be accessed easily on our website at AsthmaOhio.org."
