American Lung Association shares tips for protecting lung health during Iowa heat wave

As Iowa experiences a period of extreme heat, the American Lung Association is providing guidance to help residents protect their lung health. The current weather conditions are particularly concerning for the estimated 448,000 Iowans living with lung disease. Exposure to hot and humid air can lead to airway inflammation and worsen respiratory issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Individuals with asthma may also experience increased symptoms, as breathing in this type of air can cause airway constriction.

"Extreme weather conditions, like the current heat wave, can be especially challenging for the 448,000 residents living with lung disease in Iowa. Inhaling hot, humid air can cause airway inflammation and exacerbate respiratory disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD). It can also be a trigger for people with asthma because breathing in hot, humid air induces airway constriction."

The American Lung Association has outlined six tips aimed at helping people safeguard their lungs during periods of high temperatures. Additional information and ways to get involved are available at https://www.lung.org/extreme-heat.
