Denova partners with American Lung Association to aid asthma and COPD patients

Denova Collaborative Health has joined forces with the American Lung Association to enhance support for patients dealing with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This partnership aims to provide educational resources and action plans, particularly benefiting those in high-pollution areas with limited healthcare access.

Dr. Misbah Altaf of Denova Collaborative Health emphasized the importance of addressing environmental factors that exacerbate these conditions, stating, “Too often, we treat chronic conditions without addressing the environmental factors that make them worse.” The collaboration seeks to equip patients not only with medication but also with knowledge and tools to manage their lung health amidst challenges like poor air quality.

Phoenix ranks as the fourth worst metropolitan area for ozone pollution according to the American Lung Association’s State of the Air 2025 report. In Maricopa County, a significant portion of adults and children suffer from asthma or COPD. Dr. Altaf noted, “For those already struggling to breathe, poor air quality is more than a nuisance; it’s a serious health threat.”

The partnership will offer patients practical action plans for symptom management and exposure reduction. Real-time air quality alerts will be provided alongside guidance on adapting daily routines during high-pollution days. These measures aim to help individuals mitigate environmental risks and maintain a better quality of life.

Extreme heat in Arizona contributes to worsening air quality, increasing risks for individuals with existing lung issues. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing lungs.

This initiative aligns with Denova's commitment to whole-person care by considering medical, mental health, environmental, and social factors affecting well-being. Dr. Altaf expressed pride in collaborating with the American Lung Association: “Air quality has a direct impact on those with asthma and COPD.”

Through this partnership, Denova continues its focus on integrated care for underserved communities, helping patients manage chronic illnesses amid rising environmental challenges.
