Patients express gratitude with donations to UTHealth Houston's caregivers

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) has seen an outpouring of gratitude from patients, resulting in 335 financial gifts made to the university for Doctors’ Day. These donations are part of the Honor Your Caregiver program, which allows patients to thank exceptional caregivers who have significantly impacted their well-being.

These contributions will be distributed by the end of July to departments with recognized physicians. Departments have the flexibility to use these funds for enhancing patient care, supporting staff, or investing in innovative resources. Donations vary from a few dollars up to $15,000.

In addition to financial support, honored caregivers receive a custom-designed commemorative pin and a personal thank you note from patients. This initiative was created by UTHealth Houston’s Branding and Creative Services team as a symbol of gratitude.

Carlos A. Moreno, MD, MSPH, expressed appreciation for the generosity shown by patients towards his department. "All of us in the Department of Family and Community Medicine were pleasantly surprised and touched by the generosity of our patients," he said.

For caregivers like Bindu Akkanti, MD, being recognized through this initiative is both humbling and affirming. “Being recognized by my patient through the Honor Your Caregiver initiative was deeply meaningful,” she noted.

Marianne Cusick, MD, shared similar sentiments regarding her recognition through the program. “Being recognized by patients in the Honor Your Caregiver program holds deep meaning for members of the Department of Surgery,” she stated.

Tanya Gee highlighted that at UTHealth Houston, this program represents more than just a gesture; it is an expression that fuels progress in research and care. “Each gift made in honor of a physician not only celebrates their compassion and expertise but also advances the research and care that shape the future of medicine,” she explained.
