On May 9, the American Lung Association held its annual "Lowcountry Dancing with Stars" Oxygen Ball at the Charleston Gaillard Center. The event featured five local celebrity dancers and raised over $400,000, marking a record for the Oxygen Ball. The funds will support the Lung Association's mission to combat lung disease through programs, advocacy, and research.
Dr. Mickey Barber, founder and CEO of Better Life Carolinas, was awarded the title of Charleston Oxygen Ball Celebrity Dancer Champion. Other participants included Jamie Camilo from Rick Hendrick BMW and MINI of Charleston; Rick Lowndes of Lowndes Properties; Emily Gifford Lucey from Gallivan White Boyd; and Julie Reuther-Nestler, a fitness coach. Each dancer partnered with a professional from International Ballroom Dance Studios.
Rebecca Balitsaris, Senior Director of Development at the Lung Association, expressed gratitude: “There’s nothing like the Oxygen Ball. It’s a beloved Charleston institution that brings our community together for one unforgettable night.” She thanked all contributors for their role in raising funds for research and advocacy efforts.
The event also honored five chefs pivotal to Charleston's culinary scene in past decades: Robert Carter, Frank Lee, Brett McKee, Fred Neuville, and Bob Waggoner. They auctioned a special dinner highlighting their extensive experience. Chef Carter passed away unexpectedly shortly after the event.
Balitsaris commented on Carter's passing: “We are deeply saddened by Chef Bob Carter’s sudden passing... Chef Carter was a Charleston legend who committed to serving our Lowcountry community any way he could.”
The Lung Association serves nearly 775,000 South Carolinians affected by lung disease or cancer. Their ongoing work includes researching treatments and addressing youth vaping issues. More information is available at CharlestonOxygenBall.org.
The organization acknowledged its sponsors including Better Life Carolinas as Presenting Sponsor and others like Rick Hendrick BMW of Charleston.
