Martin Kang receives joint research award from ATS and ALA

Martin Kang, PhD, from the Medical University of South Carolina, has been awarded the ATS/ALA Commemorative 120th Anniversary Joint Research Award. The award, amounting to $120,000, is provided in collaboration with the American Lung Association and aims to support research that could significantly enhance the understanding of lung disease.

The announcement was made by the American Thoracic Society Research Program during their Research Program Benefit at the ATS 2025 International Conference held in May.

Dr. Kang intends to utilize this grant for his research titled “Redosing AAV Gene Therapy in the Lungs of a Pediatric Mouse Model of Surfactant Protein-B Deficiency.”

Kamran Atabai, MD, chair of the ATS Scientific Grant Review Committee, expressed pride in partnering with the American Lung Association: “Through this joint award, we can support promising research that has the potential to transform care for patients with serious lung diseases. We’re grateful for the Lung Association’s continued collaboration in helping us invest in the next generation of scientific leaders.”

Harold Wimmer, president and CEO of the American Lung Association, highlighted their longstanding commitment: “For 120 years, the American Lung Association has been at the forefront of the fight for healthy lungs and clean air. This anniversary grant reflects our ongoing commitment to high-quality science and to ensuring health care providers have the best evidence-based tools to guide patient care.”

The ATS Research Program is currently accepting applications for partner grants until July 1, 2025. The subsequent grant cycle will commence in January 2026. Further information is available on their website.

Donations are encouraged to support future breakthroughs in respiratory health through contributions to either the ATS Research Program or the American Lung Association.
