Four individuals from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) have been recognized with prestigious awards for their outstanding contributions to research, teaching, clinical service, and overall dedication to the university. The 2025 President’s Scholar Awards and Recognition of Excellence Award ceremony took place on May 22.
LaTanya J. Love, MD, interim president and Alkek-Williams Distinguished Chair at UTHealth Houston, presented the awards. Three faculty members received President’s Scholar Awards in recognition of their work in research, teaching, and clinical care. A fourth member was honored with the Recognition of Excellence Award for her service to the university community.
The recipients were nominated by their peers and each award includes an honorary title and a cash prize.
Vasanthi Jayaraman, PhD, MS, received the President’s Scholar Award for Excellence in Research. Rodney Kellams, PhD, professor and Bob and Hazel Casey Endowed Chair at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston highlighted her contributions: “Dr. Jayaraman’s research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter receptor channel gating... Her pioneering work has provided a framework for identifying therapeutic targets.”
Jayaraman expressed gratitude: “This award stands as a symbol not only of my journey but of the collective effort... I accept it on behalf of all of you— my village.”
Melissa Peskin, PhD, MS, was awarded for Excellence in Teaching. Christine Markham, PhD noted Peskin's contributions: “Dr. Peskin has demonstrated outstanding dedication... through innovations in teaching and curriculum development.”
Peskin commented on her recognition: “UTHealth Houston fosters an environment that truly values excellence in teaching.”
Kevin P. Lally, MD, MS was recognized for his clinical service contributions with remarks from Matthew Harting: “He is the model for dedication to patient care... Dr. Lally’s commitment over the last 30 years stands as a unique example.”
Lally acknowledged teamwork: “Clinical excellence is always a team effort,” while thanking his wife for support.
Julie Page received the Recognition of Excellence Award for her role in advancing UTHealth Houston's mission through finance and strategic partnerships. She remarked on changes over two decades that have shaped UTHealth into a "bigger, healthier family."
Page played key roles in negotiating important contracts such as Harris Health contract renegotiations.
Colleagues praised Page’s communication skills and leadership style which foster an inclusive environment where colleagues feel supported.
