American Lung Association responds to changes in COVID-19 vaccination recommendations

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a shift in COVID-19 vaccination recommendations, stating that the Administration will no longer advise healthy children or pregnant women to receive the vaccine. This change has prompted a response from the American Lung Association.

Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, expressed concern over this decision. He stated, "Secretary Kennedy has promised transparency and that he would not take vaccines away from anyone, but with today’s announcement, he is doing the opposite." Wimmer emphasized that removing these recommendations could lead to increased out-of-pocket costs for those seeking vaccinations as insurers may no longer be required to cover them without charge.

Wimmer further noted, "The science does not support this decision," highlighting ongoing public health concerns related to COVID-19. He cited data showing between 260,000-430,000 hospitalizations and over 11,500 deaths due to COVID-19 since October 2024.

The American Lung Association urges HHS to adhere to scientific guidance and expert opinions to maintain public health safety. More information on COVID-19 can be found at Lung.org/covid19.
