This month, Congress is deliberating on a budget reconciliation bill that proposes significant reductions to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and programs aimed at maintaining healthy air standards. In response, Kesa Bruce, Director of Advocacy for the American Lung Association in California, released a statement urging Representative Young Kim to oppose these cuts.
Bruce stated, “The American Lung Association urges Representative Young Kim to oppose the reconciliation bill and reject its cuts to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and clean air funding." She emphasized the importance of these programs in safeguarding the health of Californians, especially those vulnerable to chronic lung diseases and pollution.
She further highlighted that "Across California and the entire country, families rely on Medicaid for lifesaving healthcare services," pointing out that over 13.6 million residents in California depend on Medicaid. Bruce warned that such cuts would have severe repercussions for children with asthma and individuals undergoing cancer treatment among others reliant on these healthcare services.
The statement also addressed concerns regarding environmental impacts: “In addition to these devastating healthcare impacts, repealing programs that reduce air pollution while simultaneously paving the way for more dirty energy sources to be built puts polluters over public health." Bruce noted how removing tax credits for cleaner cars and home energy efficiency upgrades could exacerbate respiratory issues.
Bruce concluded by reaffirming their commitment: “The American Lung Association is committed to protecting lung health... We call on members of Congress to stand with their constituents and oppose any harmful budget cuts."
Lastly, she encouraged public action by stating: “The American Lung Association in California encourages everyone to take action by contacting Representative Young Kim and urging her to reject this legislation.”
