This month, Congress is deliberating on a budget reconciliation bill that proposes cuts to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and essential air quality programs. Aleks Casper, director of advocacy for the American Lung Association in Virginia, has issued a statement urging Representative Robert Wittman to oppose these measures.
Casper stated, "The American Lung Association urges Representative Robert Wittman to oppose the reconciliation bill and reject its cuts to Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and clean air funding. These programs are essential to protecting the health and well-being of Virginia residents, particularly those most vulnerable to chronic lung diseases and air pollution."
The proposed cuts could affect over 1.8 million Virginians who currently rely on Medicaid for healthcare services such as check-ups and cancer treatments. According to Casper, "Cutting Medicaid would impact more than 1.8 million Virginia residents who currently depend on this program for healthcare." The potential consequences include increased healthcare costs and possible closures of clinics and rural hospitals.
In addition to healthcare impacts, Casper warns against repealing programs that reduce air pollution while allowing more polluting energy sources. "These provisions will worsen respiratory conditions and increase health risks," she said.
The American Lung Association stresses the importance of maintaining access to healthcare and clean air protections. They urge Congress members to oppose budget cuts that would compromise these essentials.
Casper concluded by encouraging public action: "The American Lung Association in Virginia encourages everyone to take action by contacting Representative Robert Wittman and urging him to reject this legislation."
