California recognizes lung cancer action week with new proclamation

The American Lung Association's LUNG FORCE initiative is observing Lung Cancer Action Week in California, which has been officially recognized for the second week of May. This proclamation aims to unite efforts against lung cancer, identified as the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

House Resolution 35, authored by Assemblymember Robert Garcia from Rancho Cucamonga, designates this period as Lung Cancer Action Week 2025 in California. Assemblymember Garcia emphasized the importance of increasing awareness about lung cancer's impact on Californians and the need to educate the public on this critical health issue. "Lung cancer continues to impact residents of California, highlighting the urgent need to increase visibility about the leading cause of cancer deaths and save more lives," he stated. He further added that every second week of May will be dedicated to this cause moving forward.

Despite being a leading cause of cancer-related fatalities among both genders, there has been progress in lung cancer treatment outcomes. The five-year survival rate has seen a 44% increase over the past decade.

Kesa Bruce, Director of Advocacy with the American Lung Association in California, highlighted significant strides made since LUNG FORCE was launched. "Lung cancer has been overlooked for far too long, but since the launch of LUNG FORCE, the American Lung Association has made remarkable progress in transforming how this disease is perceived," Bruce said. She expressed gratitude towards California's efforts to raise awareness and funds during Lung Cancer Action Week through this proclamation. Bruce also thanked Assemblymember Garcia for his support and his work on AB 914 aimed at reducing diesel-related cancer risks.

Since its establishment in 2014, LUNG FORCE has successfully raised over $32 million for lung cancer research, marking an expansion in their research commitment by more than 140%.
