Nursing student Alondra Melendez reflects on journey from patient to advocate

For Alondra Melendez, a fascination with science and anatomy began during her childhood visits to the pediatrician's office. Raised in Brookshire, Texas, she experienced severe asthma and allergies, necessitating frequent medical appointments. Her interest in healthcare was sparked by the anatomical models she encountered there.

As Melendez progressed through school, her passion for the medical field remained strong. Ultimately, she chose nursing as her career path, leading her to the Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston. "There were a lot of ideas floating around in my head," Melendez said. "I ultimately went with nursing because they’re closest to the patients and get the most interaction."

Growing up in a small community with Spanish-speaking parents, Melendez often witnessed language barriers during medical visits. This experience motivated her to pursue nursing and address the shortage of Spanish-speaking providers. “I saw a shortage of Spanish-speaking providers as a child,” she noted.

In high school, Melendez and friends recognized a lack of college preparatory resources. Together, they initiated efforts that led to the creation of the Latino Empowerment for Academics and Development Initiative (LEAD), where Melendez now serves as chief communications officer. LEAD has grown significantly, assisting students worldwide in gaining college admissions.

Melendez graduated high school with substantial scholarships and an associate’s degree thanks to dual credit courses. She then enrolled in an accelerated program at Cizik School of Nursing, completing her Bachelor of Science in nursing within 15 months. “I’m now graduating college debt-free,” she remarked.

Outside academics, Melendez enjoys music and family time but values quiet moments outdoors for relaxation. Reflecting on her educational journey, she appreciates the connections made through student organizations at Cizik School of Nursing.

Upon graduation, Melendez plans to continue working in Memorial Hermann-Memorial City's intensive care unit. "Intensive care keeps me on my toes," she explained.
