Strategies for maintaining weight after weight loss medications

Weight loss medications function by altering hormones, leading individuals to feel full more quickly. However, cessation of these medications can result in a return of lost weight. Isabel Valdez, a physician assistant and associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, provides insight into maintaining weight loss after discontinuation of medication.

“Once you stop the medications, you stop adjusting the hormones. You’re going to feel hungry sooner than you were before,” Valdez stated. “The amount of the food you eat will go up.”  

Valdez emphasizes the importance of sustainable lifestyle changes to maintain weight loss. She advises adopting strategies similar to the effects of the medication. Among her suggestions are staying hydrated, limiting alcohol intake, and engaging in about 150 minutes of exercise per week to aid in calorie burning. Adequate sleep is also highlighted as it supports disease management and weight loss efforts.

“These medications are more than obesity medications that help patients lose weight. They can be used to treat sleep apnea, prevent complications from kidney disease and prevent heart disease,” Valdez noted.  

It's important to recognize that these medications are not suitable for individuals with or with a family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN syndrome), medullary thyroid cancer, or a personal history of pancreatitis. It is crucial to obtain these medications from a licensed medical doctor or an advanced practice provider who can guide individuals in achieving their health goals.
