UTHealth Houston's new telehealth clinic dedicated to epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders has welcomed its first patient. This clinic, known for its personalized genetic counseling, promises to transform treatment approaches by making genetic insights more accessible, regardless of where patients are located.
This development, described as a significant step forward in epilepsy care, combines genetic counseling with the conveniences of telehealth. "We’re excited to provide this innovative service that combines cutting-edge genetics with compassionate care through the convenience of telehealth," said Dennis Lal, PhD, program director and associate professor with the Department of Neurology at McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston.
The clinic's mission is centered on enhancing patient outcomes by tailoring treatments according to individual genetic profiles. The service promises a level of personalized care that was previously unavailable. "Our goal is to empower patients and families by giving them a clearer understanding of their genetic health, and through detailed genetic variant level reports that will enable local physicians to make informed decisions about treatment and management," Lal stated, reflecting his role as director of the Center for Neurogenetics at UTHealth Houston.
