Today, reports have emerged about significant budget cuts made by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), affecting agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and National Institutes of Health (NIH). Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, has issued a statement addressing these developments.
“Today is a good day for Big Tobacco and a bad day for anyone with lungs. HHS reductions have completely eliminated lifesaving programs, including CDC’s National Asthma Control Program, CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health, CDC’s Global Tuberculosis Program, parts of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, and many more staff and programs that are critical to the health of the children and adults across the nation. The American Lung Association is deeply concerned by these developments. We urge Congress to act swiftly and preserve and protect our nation’s biomedical and public health system.”
