American Lung Association raises concerns over Senate's new funding resolution

Today, the U.S. Senate approved a resolution to extend government funding until September 30, 2025, which includes significant budget reductions. Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, expressed concern regarding this development.

“The American Lung Association is deeply concerned about the FY25 appropriations bill passed by the Congress this week, disguised as a continuing resolution," Wimmer stated. He highlighted that the bill cuts $13 billion from domestic discretionary funding. Although it prevents a government shutdown, Wimmer argued that it compromises critical health programs under Congress's authority.

Wimmer criticized the dilemma posed by the choice between a government shutdown and what he described as an inadequate funding bill for FY25. “Neither outcome is good for lung health or the air we breathe," he said. "Both put people’s health on the line."

He also pointed out that while Congress traditionally controls budget decisions, this resolution shifts substantial discretion to the Executive Branch. This shift could lead to uncertainty and delays in research and public health initiatives without clear direction from a full funding bill.

Looking forward, Wimmer urged Congress to pass regular appropriations bills for FY26 that focus on maintaining public health, advancing research, and supporting lung health and clean air programs.
