American Lung Association urges Senate opposition against House's proposed budget cuts

The U.S. House of Representatives has advanced a budget resolution that proposes substantial federal spending cuts, raising concerns about potential reductions in Medicaid and healthy air programs. The American Lung Association expressed its disappointment with the decision.

Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, stated, "The American Lung Association is extremely disappointed that the U.S. House of Representatives voted to move this harmful budget resolution forward. As passed by the House, the bill will lead to devastating cuts to both Medicaid and programs that reduce air pollution that keep millions of people across the U.S. healthy."

Wimmer urged the Senate to reject this resolution, highlighting the possible consequences if it passes. He warned that millions could lose health coverage, including vulnerable groups such as grandparents, children, and individuals with disabilities or chronic lung diseases like asthma or COPD.

Wimmer further noted that "kids will miss routine check-ups," while nursing home residents may have to leave long-term care facilities. Pregnant women might also lose access to essential prenatal services.

The proposed cuts could also impact programs aimed at reducing air pollution. According to Wimmer, these include initiatives for cleaner school buses and tax credits for families purchasing eco-friendly vehicles and appliances.

"Medicaid ensures families are healthy enough to go to work and school," Wimmer emphasized, adding that "healthy air initiatives help prevent illness and chronic disease." He called on Senate members to oppose the House's budget proposal in order to safeguard these vital programs.
