Fight For Air Climb celebrates 20th anniversary in Tampa

On April 5, the American Lung Association in Florida will mark a significant milestone with the 20th anniversary of its stair-climbing fundraiser, the Fight For Air Climb. This event will be held at Bank of America Plaza, Tampa's second-tallest building, which has hosted most of the previous climbs.

Andrea Guptill, Chair of the Fight For Air Climb Tampa and National Sales Director at Thermo Fisher Scientific, remarked on the community's dedication over the years: "For twenty years, the Gulf Coast community has stepped up to raise awareness and funds for their families, friends and neighbors who are living with lung disease."

The Tampa metro area has seen substantial growth and development since the inaugural climb. It has become one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S., with a revitalized downtown waterfront and sports achievements by local teams.

Significant advancements have been made in lung health over two decades. Early detection and new treatments have increased lung cancer survival rates to 28.4%. The Lung Association has invested over $200 million into research for new treatments and cures for lung diseases, including funding projects at Moffitt Cancer Center.

Guptill emphasized the ongoing mission: “The Lung Association is proud to serve our Gulf Coast community and the more than 3.2 million Floridians living with lung disease and lung cancer.” She highlighted efforts in researching new treatments, addressing youth vaping, air quality protection, and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Participation in this event supports efforts to combat lung cancer, improve air quality, alleviate burdens from lung diseases, and foster a tobacco-free future. Stair climbing also offers health benefits such as improved balance and muscle strength.

The event accommodates all participants from beginners to competitive climbers. Participants set their pace through 42 floors comprising 914 stairs at Bank of America Plaza.

Registration is open for individuals and teams at ClimbTampa.org with a fee of $35 plus a $100 fundraising minimum.
