American Lung Association launches PSAs promoting early detection for lung cancer

Early detection plays a crucial role in lung cancer treatment, potentially saving lives. The American Lung Association and the Ad Council have taken steps to address this pressing health issue by releasing new public service announcements (PSAs) as part of their ongoing Saved By The Scan campaign. These PSAs, titled "If Your Lungs Could Talk," aim to inform current and former smokers about the importance of lung cancer screening.

The release of these PSAs coincides with World Cancer Day and highlights findings from the American Lung Association's 2024 "State of Lung Cancer" report. According to the report, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, yet only 16% of those at high risk have been screened. The report emphasizes that annual low-dose CT scans can reduce lung cancer mortality by up to 20%, underscoring the need for high-risk individuals to be aware of their risks and seek medical advice.

Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, stated: “While lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., there is hope. Lung cancer screening has played a critical role in the 44% increase in the lung cancer survival rate over the past decade.” He added that this new campaign aims to continue raising awareness about lifesaving screenings.

Since its launch, over 1.3 million Americans have used the Saved By The Scan eligibility quiz to assess their risk for lung cancer. The campaign has led to increased discussions between eligible individuals and healthcare providers regarding screening options—from 27% in 2021 to 43% this year—and an increase in those undergoing scans—from 21% in 2021 to 35% in 2024.

Heidi Arthur, chief campaign development officer for the Ad Council, remarked: “By inspiring people to talk with their doctor about lung cancer screenings, we can offer hope for early detection, effective treatment and ultimately save lives.” She expressed pride in partnering with both organizations on this initiative.

The new PSAs feature a humorous dialogue between a former smoker and personified lungs, aiming to educate viewers on early detection's importance since symptoms often appear late. These advertisements will be distributed nationwide across various media platforms using donated time and space.
