The American Lung Association in South Carolina is preparing for its ninth annual Lip Sync For Lungs Live Battle at the Charleston Music Hall on February 27. This year's theme, "Rhinestones & Rockstars," combines elements of country and pop-rock music, with performers set to deliver a blend of lip-syncing and dance routines.
Lori DeNicola, event chair and owner of Petaloso, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming fundraiser: “This ain’t our first rodeo! We’ve hosted eight incredible Live Battles, and the Charleston community has showed us this grand and off-the-wall event is here to stay.” She highlighted the impact of the funds raised since the inaugural event, stating that nearly $1 million has been collected. This funding supports various initiatives such as helping 10,000 children quit vaping or sustaining over five years of lung cancer research.
Last year's champion, Geoff Richardson from Lava Salon, impressed attendees with his portrayal of Jon Bon Jovi alongside his son Cason as Richie Sambora. Richardson raised almost $40,000 through community contributions. Reflecting on the event's value, he stated: "Here’s my elevator pitch for folks who have never been to Lip Sync for Lungs. The tickets are $45 each—the $45 is a donation, and in return, we give you the best two hours of your life."
DeNicola encouraged participation by saying: “Grab your boots, bedazzle that jacket, and get ready to party like a rockstar, all while supporting a great cause! Because when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.”
Previous winners include individuals from diverse professional backgrounds such as Francesca DiSalvo-Follmer (Pure Luxe Bride), Drew Pond (Dock House Digital), Kyle “K’Otic” Johnson, Bryan Mahanes (Other Brother Entertainment), Robert Beall (James Island Family Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry), Susan Pearlstine, Dr. Yanis Bellil (Roper St. Francis Healthcare), and Lance Oliver (Motley Rice Law Firm).
The Lung Association aims to support nearly 775,000 South Carolinians affected by lung disease through research on treatments and cures while addressing issues like youth vaping and air quality.
