American Lung Association offers tips for improving lung health in the new year

With the New Year approaching, the American Lung Association in Oklahoma has shared guidance for those looking to prioritize lung health. As individuals breathe approximately 23,000 times a day, maintaining lung health is crucial for overall well-being.

The association emphasizes the importance of regular medical check-ups. "Regular check-ups help prevent diseases, even when you are feeling well," they state. This advice is particularly pertinent for lung diseases that may not show symptoms until advanced stages.

For smokers and tobacco users, the organization urges starting a quit journey in 2025. They offer resources at Lung.org/Quit-Smoking or through their helpline at 1-800-LUNGUSA (1-800-586-4872). The association highlights that tobacco remains a leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., and advises against using e-cigarettes as cessation tools.

Lung cancer screening is another focus area. With only 16% of high-risk individuals getting screened annually, early detection through low-dose CT scans can significantly improve survival rates. Those aged 50-80 who smoke or have recently quit are encouraged to assess their eligibility via a quiz at SavedByTheScan.org.

Vaccination is also recommended as a preventive measure against illnesses like COVID-19 and flu. The association stresses keeping up with vaccinations for oneself and loved ones.

Finally, limiting exposure to air pollutants is advised. Avoiding polluted environments and testing homes for radon are suggested actions to protect lung health. Monitoring daily air quality forecasts can also aid those with asthma or other respiratory concerns.
