The American Lung Association has released its 2024 "State of Lung Cancer" report, shedding light on the impact of lung cancer in Georgia and underscoring the need for enhanced screening and early detection efforts. The report indicates that lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths both in Georgia and across the United States. In Georgia, only 25.9 percent of cases are diagnosed at an early stage, a critical factor as early diagnosis significantly improves the five-year survival rate.
Danna Thompson, director of advocacy for the American Lung Association in Georgia, emphasized the importance of focusing on increased access to lung cancer screening and early detection initiatives. "Lung cancer is a devastating disease and impacts far too many families in Georgia," she stated. "This year’s ‘State of Lung Cancer’ report shows that Georgia must continue focus on increasing access to lung cancer screening and early detection initiatives to save lives."
The report also highlights health disparities within the state, noting that Asian or Pacific Islander individuals are less likely to receive an early diagnosis compared to other groups.
Nationally, there is some positive news as well; over the past five years, advancements in awareness, detection, and treatment have led to a 26 percent improvement in lung cancer survival rates.
A significant aspect discussed in this year's report is insurance coverage requirements for comprehensive biomarker testing across different states. This type of testing examines changes in tumor DNA to determine suitable treatment options based on specific subtypes of lung cancer. While not all states mandate insurance coverage for this testing, Georgia does require it.
Dr. Jannifer Harper, chair of the Lung Association’s Georgia Leadership Board, highlighted progress made due to increased awareness and research into new treatments: “Thankfully, the lung cancer survival rate has improved due to increased awareness, access to healthcare and screening, and cutting-edge research into new treatments,” she said.
The association calls upon Congress to pass legislation aimed at increasing access to lung cancer screenings nationwide while urging other states to adopt policies similar to those in place in Georgia regarding biomarker testing coverage.
Georgia's lack of Medicaid expansion leaves over 500,000 low-income residents without healthcare coverage—a gap affecting veterans, farmers, part-time workers among others—which poses additional challenges for addressing health needs related specifically towards combating diseases like lung cancers effectively statewide according policymakers' priorities around closing such gaps altogether moving forward according their respective agendas accordingly thereby ensuring equitable care delivery mechanisms available universally regardless socioeconomic status demographics alike eventually ultimately benefiting everyone involved equally fairly justly transparently responsibly sustainably ethically comprehensively holistically inclusively innovatively creatively collaboratively
