Kentucky shows progress in lung cancer incidence and survival according to new report

The American Lung Association has released its 2024 "State of Lung Cancer" report, detailing improvements in lung cancer metrics for Kentucky. The state has shown a 12% improvement in incidence rates, a 30% increase in survival rates, and a 14% enhancement in early detection over the past five years.

Shannon Baker, Advocacy Director for the American Lung Association, emphasized the significance of these findings: "Lung cancer is a devastating disease and impacts far too many families in Kentucky. To address the burden of lung cancer and to help improve the lives of people it impacts, we must continue to evaluate the greatest needs. This report helps us prioritize which areas to focus on to truly make an impact."

The national survival rate for lung cancer has improved by 26% over the last five years due to increased awareness and advancements in detection and treatment methods.

This year's report also explores health insurance coverage requirements for comprehensive biomarker testing across different states. Such testing can reveal changes in tumor DNA that assist in tailoring treatment options for patients. In Kentucky, insurance coverage for this testing is mandatory.

The American Lung Association encourages other states to adopt similar policies mandating insurance coverage for comprehensive biomarker testing. Additionally, they are urging Congress to pass the Increasing Access to Lung Cancer Screening Act (H.R. 4286).

To support their mission further, the organization invites participation in events like the Fight For Air Climb scheduled for March 23, 2025, at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville.
