American Lung Association urges action during Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a period dedicated to increasing understanding of lung cancer, promoting screening, and funding research efforts. The American Lung Association in South Carolina is actively participating in these initiatives.

Eleanor Hardy, a member of the LUNG FORCE Run/Walk Event cabinet and Thoracic Oncology Physician Assistant at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, highlighted the impact of awareness and medical advancements on survival rates. “Every two minutes, a person in the U.S. learns they have lung cancer. But there is hope. Thanks to increased awareness and advancements in detection and treatment, the survival rate has increased by 44% in the past decade,” she stated.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. It can affect anyone regardless of their background or lifestyle.

The American Lung Association encourages individuals to take three specific actions during this month to contribute to ending lung cancer.
