UTHealth Houston President Giuseppe N. Colasurdo announces intention to step down

Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, MD, President of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), has announced his intention to step down from his position. Colasurdo joined the faculty in 1995 as an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics and has since held various roles, including Chair and Dean.

Reflecting on his tenure, Colasurdo stated, "When I joined the faculty of what is now our McGovern Medical School in 1995 as an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics, I never imagined the opportunities that awaited me here at UTHealth Houston." He acknowledged the honor and adventure of his 29-year career at the institution.

Colasurdo admitted to initial hesitation when stepping into leadership roles but credited the UTHealth Houston community for guiding him professionally and personally. "I have been fortunate to work with and learn from this amazing community—the 'many faces of UTHealth Houston'—and you have guided me both professionally and personally throughout my tenure," he said.

He expressed gratitude towards students, faculty members, staff, the Development Board, Regents, and colleagues across The University of Texas System for their support. "The passion of our students, the brilliance of our faculty members, the unwavering commitment of our staff...you have all served as my mentors and partners in furthering the mission areas of this university," Colasurdo remarked.

Announcing his decision to step down as President after 12 years in the role, Colasurdo said it was a privilege to work alongside everyone during a period of significant growth for UTHealth Houston. "Together we have weathered storms both literal and figurative," he noted.

Colasurdo will continue serving as President while a search for his successor is conducted. He assured that his door remains open for any questions during this transition period. In closing, he thanked everyone for their support and expressed optimism about UTHealth Houston's future. "I am confident that the great days for UTHealth Houston are just beginning," he concluded.
