American Lung Association urges vaccinations amid ongoing COVID-19 risks

Updated COVID-19 vaccines for the 2024-25 season are now available, aiming to prevent severe illness and death from the virus. The American Lung Association is encouraging everyone aged six months and older to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their communities.

In August, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved and authorized these updated vaccines. "The summer COVID-19 surge across the U.S. is proof that this disease remains a public health risk," said Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. "COVID-19 evolves like other common viruses, and we’re grateful for updated vaccines to help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death."

Vaccination is recommended for everyone aged six months and older. Individual recommendations vary based on age, previous vaccination status, timing of the last vaccine dose, and the specific vaccine product received. COVID-19 vaccines are expected to be widely available at no cost through most insurance plans. For those without health insurance, local community health centers or health departments may offer low or no-cost options. Vaccines.gov provides information on pharmacy locations where appointments can be scheduled.

Certain groups remain at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19. These include people aged 65 and older; individuals with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis or pulmonary hypertension; current or former smokers; adults with certain medical conditions including immunocompromised individuals; heart disease patients; diabetics; and those with chronic kidney disease.

Underserved communities—such as Black, Latino/Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native populations—may also face higher risks due to factors like living or working conditions or barriers to healthcare access. They might also have multiple chronic medical conditions.

The American Lung Association recommends vaccination as well as other protective measures against COVID-19. Additional information about COVID-19 and updated vaccines can be found at Lung.org/covid19.
