Spa treatments may benefit lung health

A spa day is often associated with relaxation and revitalization of the body and mind, but it may also benefit lung health. Jennifer DiGiandomenico of Stella Luna Counseling and Wellness, a local wellness center, asserts that "several spa-like therapies, like halotherapy, are designed to support and enhance lung health."

Stella Luna Counseling and Wellness is partnering with the American Lung Association to support the upcoming 10th annual LUNG FORCE Walk at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on September 29.

"We are committed to holistic wellness. By working together, we can advance health education, support research and engage with the community to promote holistic wellness. We are passionate about making a positive impact and are always excited to join forces with like-minded organizations to enhance the well-being of our community," said DiGiandomenico.

Halotherapy helps with mucus clearance which improves airflow and reduces symptoms associated with conditions like asthma and COPD, according to DiGiandomenico. Halotherapy involves relaxing and breathing in microscopic particles of salty air emitted into the room by a halogenerator. She says the therapy has anti-inflammatory effects which reduce inflammation in the airways, alleviating symptoms of chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

"There’s also a therapy like a full spectrum dry heat sauna which enhances blood circulation. This improves blood flow to the lungs and respiratory muscles, aiding in overall lung function and recovery. Yoga enhances lung capacity and efficiency through techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing and alternate nostril breathing," she said.

Stella Luna Counseling and Wellness will host a complimentary yoga session at the LUNG FORCE Walk at 8:30 am in front of the Rhinos. They will also provide tai chi, reiki sessions, among other activities throughout the event.

The LUNG FORCE Walk supports lifesaving research, local programs, and advocacy for the 1.6 million people in Ohio suffering from lung disease.

In addition to offering a fun family environment and health screenings, participants can enjoy an untimed 5K route through Cleveland Zoo or opt for a shorter 1-mile option. The zoo will be closed to the public during this event.

The Lung Association encourages participation in this community event for celebration, education, and camaraderie. Registration for individuals or teams is free; however, fundraising is encouraged to support the mission of the American Lung Association. Participants will receive complimentary zoo admission and free parking if they arrive by 9:30 am.
