Karen Undieme celebrates three years cancer-free with LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths, but survival rates are improving. Over the past decade, the survival rate has increased by more than 50%.

“After receiving my stage 3 lung cancer diagnosis, my doctor said, ‘you have a good chance of beating this because of new treatments and research over the last several years,’” Karen Undieme stated.

In 2021, Undieme had her right lobe removed and underwent several months of treatment. She is now celebrating being cancer-free by spreading a hopeful message to others facing similar challenges.

“I want to be a ray of hope for people going through this,” Undieme added.

Undieme will join hundreds of participants and volunteers at the 11th annual LUNG FORCE Walk at the Detroit Zoo on September 29 at 7:30 a.m. The event supports lifesaving research, local programs, and advocacy for the 1.1 million people in Detroit suffering from lung disease.

Registration is open for the event, which welcomes families, friends, co-workers, lung disease survivors, and their loved ones. Participants can enjoy a 1.5-mile untimed route through the Detroit Zoo or opt for a shorter walk. The zoo will be closed to the public during the event.

The American Lung Association encourages community participation for celebration, education, and camaraderie. Registration for individuals and teams is free; however, fundraising is encouraged to support the association's mission. Participants will receive complimentary zoo admission.
