Gulf Coast Bike Trek aims to boost awareness on children's lung health

Children's lungs and immune systems are still developing, making them more vulnerable to infectious diseases, air pollution, second-hand smoke, and other irritants. The rise in vaping use among middle school students further complicates the issue.

The American Lung Association in Florida is organizing the Gulf Coast Bike Trek to raise awareness of pediatric lung health. Dr. John Prpich, a Tampa-area pediatric pulmonologist and member of the Gulf Coast Bike Trek committee, emphasized the importance of vigilance during the fall season. "The fall season is a critical time for families to be aware of new asthma triggers, exposure to new viruses, peer pressure to smoke or vape and other stressors that can impact kids’ health," he stated.

Dr. Prpich highlighted Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) as a particular concern due to its high contagion rate and potential severity. "RSV is particularly concerning because it is highly contagious and can develop into a serious respiratory illness requiring hospitalization. While most cases of RSV are mild, babies, toddlers and children with compromised immune systems are the most vulnerable. It’s important for families to understand potential risks and to consult their pediatrician," he advised.

The Gulf Coast Bike Trek will take place on Saturday, October 5. Participants can choose from three scenic courses along the Pinellas Trail: a 10-mile Family Ride, a 40-mile ride, or a 62-mile metric century ride. The event promises top-notch rider support, numerous rest stops, and an end-of-ride celebration featuring food, music, and more. Funds raised will support efforts to improve pediatric lung health in Florida and beyond.
