American Lung Association offers back-to-school lung health tips

As students across the District of Columbia prepare for the 2024-2025 school year, the American Lung Association in the District is offering essential guidance to ensure lung health remains a priority. This period can present new lung health challenges, and the association aims to equip parents, young adults, and school officials with necessary information.

“Back to school is an exciting time for District students, and it is also a time for a fresh, healthy start,” said Deb Brown, Chief Mission Officer of the American Lung Association. “As we enter the new school year, it is critical for parents, students and school staff to be aware of new asthma triggers, exposure to new viruses, peer pressure to smoke or vape, and other stressors that can impact the health of students. We are happy to offer several resources and guidance to keep everyone healthy this year.”

The association's Creating Lung-Friendly Environments for Youth initiative provides schools and caregivers with tools to address chronic lung diseases such as asthma. It also covers air quality and tobacco-free policies. The initiative includes free information, guides, and sample policies that can be implemented in educational settings.

Additionally, the Lung Association focuses on educating parents, students, and school officials on four critical areas of lung health. More resources are available at Lung.org.
