South Florida raises $200K at annual event to combat lung cancer

On the evening of June 7, 185 guests joined the American Lung Association in South Florida for its annual LUNG FORCE Sunset Soiree. The event, sponsored by Memorial Cancer Institute and presented by the Erwin and Barbara Mautner Charitable Foundation, raised nearly $200,000 to support efforts to end lung cancer and lung disease through local programs, advocacy efforts, and research.

“The LUNG FORCE Sunset Soiree has become a must-attend, luxury event of the season thanks to creative themes, interactive experiences, celebratory atmosphere and, of course, the dedicated support of our South Florida community,” said Dr. Mark J. Hauser, chair of the Lung Association’s South Florida Local Leadership Board. “Thank you to our LUNG FORCE Leaders, guests and corporate partners who helped us raise $200,000 to save lives right here in Florida and beyond.”

During the celebrations at the historic Addison of Boca Raton estate, two honorees were recognized for their contributions: Dr. Luis E. Raez and Dr. Glenn Singer.

Dr. Raez received the Distinguished Physician Award for his work as an oncologist and hematologist at Memorial Cancer Institute. He has been caring for patients with lung cancer for over 20 years and leads research aimed at improving treatments and outcomes. Dr. Raez currently serves as Medical Director and Chief Scientific Officer at Memorial Cancer Institute.

Dr. Singer was honored with the first-ever Lighting the Way Champion Award by Florida Power & Light Company for raising funds and awareness to help find a cure for lung cancer. A pulmonologist with more than 40 years of service to the community, he participated in the LUNG FORCE Leaders competition alongside lung cancer survivor Stacey Eisdorfer and Riley Burke.

Funds raised at the LUNG FORCE Sunset Soiree will support research, local programs, and advocacy for over 2.7 million Floridians living with lung disease.
