Mayo Clinic names Gelareh Zadeh new chair for Department of Neurosurgery

Gelareh Zadeh, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed the new chair of the Mayo Clinic Department of Neurosurgery in Rochester, starting in the fall of 2024. Dr. Zadeh transitions to Mayo Clinic from the University of Toronto, where she holds multiple positions including division head of Neurosurgery at the University Health Network, medical director of the Krembil Neuroscience Program, co-director of the Krembil Brain Institute, senior scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and Dan Family Chair and professor of Neurosurgery.

"We're honored to have her join Mayo Clinic to lead the Department of Neurosurgery in Rochester as we continue our work to transform healthcare."

Dr. Zadeh specializes in skull-base and neuro-oncology practices with several multidisciplinary specialized programs such as brain metastases, pituitary and neurofibromatosis clinics. Her research laboratory focuses on molecular analysis of brain tumors and understanding their response to targeted therapies.

Her extensive research has significantly advanced clinical care and has been published in journals like Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Genetics, Nature Communications, and Cancer Cell. She consistently receives peer-reviewed funding from organizations including the National Institutes of Health, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Department of Defense, Brain Tumour Charity, V Foundation for Cancer Research, Canadian Cancer Society, Brain Canada Foundation, Terry Fox Research Institute among others.

Dr. Zadeh's academic and clinical contributions have earned her numerous awards such as the Canada Gairdner Momentum Award, William E. Rawls Prize from the Canadian Cancer Society, and American Brain Tumor Translational Research Award. She also holds leadership roles in various international organizations including the Society of Neuro-Oncology, World Federation of Neurological Societies and International Consortium on Meningiomas which she co-founded.

She will succeed Robert Spinner, M.D., who has chaired the Department since 2015. Dr. Spinner's tenure was marked by a vision to improve neurosurgical patient care globally while fostering a culture that encouraged creativity and innovation.
